We found this mynah at Block 11 Cantonment Close, caught in the bird repellent (glue-type) applied on the rubbish collection centre's roof. The caller who contacted us shared that she had previously rescued several birds and a cat in the vicinity. The animals had unfortunately got themselves stuck to the building structure due to the bird repellent used by the town council's contractor. With the help of a cleaner, our Junior Inspectors managed to get to the bird. The kind caller generously offer...

We received a call this morning from a member of staff at the Aqueen Hotel at 387 Balestier Road. The staff first found these two Shih-Tzus the night before (18 November 2013) at about 7pm, tied to the fence at the back of the hotel. Thinking it was temporary, the staff did not pursue the matter. However, he found the dogs in the same position this morning and immediately called us. If you have any information that may help us with the identification of the person responsible for this, please...

We received a call at about 2.30pm today, about a suspected case of abuse. Our Junior Inspector (JI) arrived on the scene at Block 603 Hougang Avenue 4 and found this cat carcass at the foot of the block. Our JI brought the carcass back with him and our consultant vet found that the cat's hind legs were badly fractured, with no other visible injuries apart from internal bleeding and superficial scratches sustained from the fall. The cat was sterilised and very well-groomed, with clean ears and t...

Meet Charlie, a six-year-old Shih Tzu. We found him tied to a water pipe on the 24th floor of an HDB block in Ang Mo Kio. Abandoned by his callous owner, Charlie had a very bad fungal infection that resulted in his flaky skin and musty smell. It "snows" wherever Charlie goes! Despite his horrible skin condition, our loving fosterer readily welcomed Charlie into her home. He's now getting lots of love and attention from our awesome fosterer, and will be up for adoption when his bad fungal infecti...

The Sociable, Confident Dog
11th Nov 2013, by SPCA Singapore

A sociable and confident dog doesn't have to greet every person or dog that it meets, but it must be able to walk away when it needs to, and that ability to do so goes beyond being obedient. It has to do with the dog's internal state of calmness, painstakingly cultivated by teaching your dog skills to help it cope with different situations. Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and the dogs in our shelter. Under her Canine Education programme, she w...

We received an emergency call last week and our Junior Inspector arrived on the scene to find a kitten stuck on a glue board trap. He rushed the kitten back to our shelter and our Animal Care Officers immediately began the taxing task of freeing the kitten. A fair bit of manoeuvring and a lot of vegetable oil later, we managed to get the kitten off the glue board and successfully removed the excess glue on her body. Stunned but safe, the 3-week old baby lapped up her food and took a much needed ...

It's Me And My Dog
4th Nov 2013, by SPCA Singapore

We often tempt our dogs with treats in order to help them learn faster during a training session. But do we always have to reward them with food when we want them to perform a specific act? What happens when we don't have treats on us? Can a dog trained using food rewards 'perform' without food? Of course it can, if you use food rewards correctly - as a reward and not a bribe. Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and the dogs in our shelter. Under...
