8 Reasons Why You Should Never Declaw Your Cats 26th Jun 2014, by SPCA Singapore
We are strongly AGAINST the de-clawing of cats. De-clawing is a painful, permanently crippling and, of course, inhumane procedure which harms, rather than helps, the cat.
We would advise cat owners to get their cats' nails trimmed regularly and have sufficient scratching posts in their respective households, as far more effective measures of optimising cat care.

It’s the thought that counts!
We can’t thank enough the following:
- Joia (big sis)
- Joilyn (little sis)
- and a neat pack of helpers, supporters, parents and even their Ah Ma,
for selling their homemade wares at our shelter today (25 June) from 11am to 3pm.
They raised over S$200, all of which go to the shelter, over a mere matter of hours! Not bad for a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old, and with Ah Ma in tow!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT: Sweet, Sweet MONA!
3-year-wise, black-tan coloured, cross-breed Mona sports a solid physique but has a really soft, warm heart! She is calm, gentle and incredibly friendly with the adult humans she meets, though she can get rather choosy with her canine friends, thanks to her discerning nature. With careful socialization, nonetheless, she can be gradually honed to be more accepting of other dogs. For the moment, she would do great for that forever home keen on adopting jus...

Dog Bite Prevention Tip #3 (a fortnightly feature by SPCA)
- READ THE DOG’S CUES!
In this photo, the dog is growling to show its discomfort. NEVER PUNISH A DOG FOR GROWLING. A dog growls as an attempt to DIFFUSE a potentially threatening situation, NOT to escalate it. But if its growl is ignored or punished, without the removal of the perceived threat, the dog may escalate to a snap or a bite.
BE POLITE TO A DOG. Learn to read its body language and stop your children from hugging a dog, es...

Cat in a corner, on the (l)edge of despair….
Our Animal Support department received a call, just last night (June 18, 2014), about a cat perched on the 11th floor ledge of a public housing block along Yishun Ring Road.
Our rescue team was quickly despatched to the scene, and found the tri-coloured cat, a local community feline, trapped on that dangerously inclined ledge, reportedly for some time. It may not have budged from its spot, sensing the height and gradient.
Our officer immediately...

We would like to share a touching story, from the U.S. context, from The Dodo online:-
Florida man slices hole into the side of his truck, to save kitten trapped inside....
Errand Frazier, of Vero Beach, had been out fishing, late in May 2014, when he heard the faint sound of a kitten crying out. Upon taking a closer look, he discovered the mewing was actually emanating from behind one of his truck’s side panels.
Not wanting to risk injuring the kitten - by yanking it out by force or abras...

Shell we keep terrapins?
Baby terrapins are really cute! But they tend to grow to be about the size of a typical dinner plate, and can live up to the age of 50 years!
The SPCA does not encourage the keeping of terrapins because of this, as many terrapin owners have been observed to release their terrapins, after some time, into ponds and reservoirs, thereby upsetting the ecological balance of our natural environment.

We would like to share that China’s annual Dog-meat Eating Festival 2014, would be on this Saturday (21 JUNE, 2014) in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
More than 10,000 dogs are likely to be slaughtered and served as hotpots with “litchis” (lychees) and strong liquor.
The festival has once again brought China's animal rights activists together, who have urged Yulin residents to stop eating dog meat and abolish the festival.
While defenders of local traditions want to continue ...

Smoochy, rescued from a glue board trap when she was 3 weeks old, finds love happily ever after!
Some time in October 2013, Smoochy was actually reported to our rescue department, as she was seen stuck on a glue board trap in a school.
A fair bit of manoeuvring and a lot of vegetable oil later, we managed to get her off the glue board and successfully removed the excess glue on her body.
Then, that fateful day came, that would change her life forever. A far cry from the distress she’s kno...

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT:
Our 5 Project ADORE-eligible Mongrels
(Noel, Rover, Rox, Wells & Wish)
Mongrels are very intelligent dogs and an added bonus of having such pets is that they tend to be low-maintenance and do not require much, heavy grooming.
Being of a mixed, unspecific lineage, they also tend to exhibit ‘hybrid vigour’ and thus greater resistance in general to illnesses and ailments. Because their temperament and behaviour tend to be more moderate, mongrels are often more adaptable...

Latest on SPCA’s Appeal for Jail Term for Businessman (Lim Soo Seng) convicted for Pet Neglect
- The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) assesses that “the S$10,000 fine imposed, the maximum fine under the law, was not manifestly inadequate”, and therefore, did NOT appeal against that - hence, there would be NO JAIL TERM over and above the S$10,000 fine
The AGC has responded to SPCA’s appeal a month, or so, after our letter to them (dated 5 May, 2014) asking for a court sentence that wo...
