Dogs: Not Just Best Friends But Great Personal Trainers, Too 27th Aug 2014, by SPCA Singapore
Yet another reason why they are "man's best friends" - dogs can help you stay in great shape, too. In need of a trusty driver? Move over, 4 wheels! Here's the real deal - the 4-legged fitness buddy!
Dog-walking, incidentally, does go on 6 days a week (provided the weather is friendly, too) here at the SPCA shelter! Our committed, ever-growing posse of dog-walkers has been taking our dogs on their regular, morning walks, for about 20 to 25 minutes per session, around the shelter's vicinity - ...

Tom, re-named Mars, happily ever after!
Silky Terrier, Tom, was terribly skinny and almost a sorry sight more than 2 years ago, when he was up for adoption at our shelter. That didn’t deter Jesmine Chung’s family from adopting him, giving him renewed hopes, and then transforming his life altogether.
Now Tom, or Mars rather, can truly live up to his breed’s name, what with his fur having grown silky and radiant – indeed, the way it should be! Mars’ Happy Tale, & happy new beginning, ...

Budding Animal Champions from Woodlands Ring Secondary School!
We are delighted to have stalwart supporters from Woodlands Ring Secondary join us on our animal welfare cause. Just last Friday (22 August 2014), the group brought an entire trolley load of pet food for our shelter animals, as they came by to learn more about SPCA and to interact with the animals! Thanks to their pet food donation drive held in their school, involving the collective efforts of all the classes, they've managed to ma...

This Poor Dog Traveled 4 Miles To Get THIS Bag. What’s Inside Brought Tears To My Eyes. 25th Aug 2014, by SPCA Singapore
Read on, and be inspired by a dog's steadfast commitment to ensuring her fellow junkyard family members (another dog, a cat, a mule, and several chickens) all have sufficient food every night without fail.
The dog, Lilica (a female mutt / mixed-breed abandoned when she was a puppy), has been travelling TWO MILES - along a busy highway - just to meet a kind-hearted lady (who prepares the food) in order to 'collect' and bring a bag of food back to feed her animal companions, on a nightly basis....

Mixed Breeds are so unique, and special, you're unlikely to find them in the pet shops! (Perhaps, you'd want to adopt one then, from our shelter?)
There's a nagging suspicion, at least, that mixed breed dogs are "not second-class, but first-rate" (to find out more, surf over to: http://www.crossbreed-and-mongrel-club.org.uk/home /choosing-a-mixed-breed/).
Because their temperament and behaviour tend to be more moderate and balanced, mixed breed dogs are often more flexible and can potentiall...

SPCA Against Instalment Plans That Objectify Animal Lives 21st Aug 2014, by SPCA Singapore
In SPCA's letter to TODAY's "Voices" editor, published in today's (21 Aug, 2014) edition, we have reinforced the relevance and importance of responsible pet ownership. Singaporeans should not engage in impulse buying which the formerly available UOB interest-free instalment plan would have facilitated.
Ultimately, live animals should never be a part of the credit card culture and not to be taken as mere commodities indiscriminately picked off the shelves.
We hope also that would-be pet owner...

SPCA rescues cat from train’s tracks, & appeals for cat’s owner to reclaim it! (Cat sports a unique, studded, green collar)
We were alerted, just yesterday morning (August 19, 2014), to a cat seemingly rooted to a spot right underneath a train’s rail at Fernvale LRT Station. The cat hardly fidgeted, but was conspicuous enough to be detected by the concerned informer and onlookers.
Our rescue officer, with the help of the station’s staff, managed to remove the distressed cat from that...

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT: Make some noise for ROWDY!
Caught on St John’s Island and then sterilised and eartipped, about a year ago, Rowdy is a sweet, laid back and highly approachable cat. This 4-year-wise, male, tabby-brown local feline has longed for a forever home and a family to call his own. We hope a committed adopter out there will come to our shelter and whisk Rowdy away to the sweet, loving home he’s more than deserving of.
Rowdy, and other heart-warming sweeties, all eagerly await th...

Just about a year ago (in September 2013), a litter of ten puppies lost their mother as she was hit - and killed instantly - by a truck. SPCA was alerted to the 10 puppies that were left to fend for themselves, and took all 10 in. We turned to our fosterers in whose care the babies grew up well. All 10 babies were then adopted by different families and have been well brought up - and proof of the pudding is in the eating (pardon the pun!) of the birthday cake! :)
To celebrate their turning 1-y...

Dog Bite Prevention Tip #7 (a fortnightly feature by SPCA)
- WATCH OUT FOR STRESS SIGNALS FROM THE DOG “SHAKING ITSELF OFF”
When a dog is stressed and is trying to calm down, it may “shake itself off”. The dog may shake off its whole body, or just parts of it, e.g. the head. When you see your dog shaking off, what it means is that whatever has happened before the “shake-off” was causing stress to your dog. It could be a hug, a kiss, a pet over the head or a distraction that was to...

This National Day season, do make it extra special and meaningful by welcoming any of our sweet mixed-breed dogs to your home - and heart!

Exactly 1 week ago (August 7, 2014), we posted here the rescue tale of this Glue Board Trap victim. Mickey Mouse, oops, we meant Mickey Kitten, whom we managed to help set free from the glue board and glue (well, most of it), deserves airtime again!
Mickey is now all playful and geared up to meet his forever family and home! But before we put him up for adoption, here’s another round of the DAILY routine of cooking oil and shampoo we need to bathe him in, for this week at least. Slowly but s...
