Cat trapped on a tree-top, somewhere along Woodlands Drive
Just last Fri (Sep 5, 2014) night, we were alerted to a black/white tabby seen perched on the branches of a tall tree somewhere in Woodlands. The cat was suspected to be in distress, as related to us by our informers.
Our rescue pair, upon arriving at the scene, with the help of our informers, some strategy and a long ladder, managed to climb to almost where the cat was stranded. About 45 minutes later, the rescue officers succeeded i...

Stray Dog Killed With Unapproved Trap, AVA To Take Action 6th Sep 2014, by SPCA Singapore
We thank all who have alerted us to the case of a community dog killed during a dog control operation in Ang Mo Kio, just 2 days ago (Thurs 4 Sep, 2014).
We rushed down to the site shortly after having been informed by a dog feeder who witnessed the incident. We have looked into the matter, independently and with the AVA.
The AVA's investigations later showed that the trap used by the contractor had been modified and was not actually approved for use in community dog control operations.
Th...

The Spotlight’s on SPOTTY!
SPOTTY, aptly named for the black freckles splattered around his body, is one really lovable and friendly cross-breed.
A 3-year-wise black/white canine, he has the looks to boot and the personality to charm his would-be adopting family with. He readily hooks you with those big brown eyes, sits at your feet and wiggles his bum, begging for a stroke, a scratch or a cuddle, maybe even a treat! He can be a little assertive at times, though, and once that aspect of his ...

Even More Evidence That Shock Collars Aren't The Only Answer 3rd Sep 2014, by SPCA Singapore
Following SPCA's media statement last week (on Aug 28, 2014) pushing for more humane means of curbing excessive barking, here's more compelling evidence from rural Australia - that POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT trumps using shock/electric collars.
We urge all dog owners & trainers to say "no" to shock collars (already considered illegal as an abusive tool in countries like Finland and Wales). Far more favourable methods in effective dog training should emphasise:
- improving the dog-handler/owner bon...

On 23 Aug 2014 (Saturday), students and staff of Nanyang Junior College held their “Wild Run” with SPCA, naming SPCA as its beneficiary of about S$2,500 raised from donations.
The Wild Run also saw our very own mixed-breed Ida (and our Executive Director Corinne’s Cocker Spaniel, Dewey) join in the festivities. A few other animals were brought along as well, to facilitate their interaction with the students.
Kudos to the school for implementing a meaningful collaborative project, and t...

Dog Bite Prevention Tip #7 (a fortnightly feature by SPCA)
- WATCH OUT FOR POTENTIAL DOG FIGHTS
In this photo, what may have started off as play between the 2 dogs has escalated into a potential bite or fight situation. Note the whale eyes in both dogs. The bigger dog has bared its teeth in warning, but the smaller dog continues to chase and nip at it. Neither dog has the loose, wriggly body language that shows they’re enjoying the interaction, instead, they’re stiff. The smaller dog also ...

JET, our 3-legged Mixed Breed lands a forever home, today (30 Aug)!
2-year-wise, male cutie, Jet, has sadly been without a leg, when we first took him in. But that hasn't dampened his energy all this while, and he has been happy and healthy - and way too cool to ignore! He has touched us all at the shelter, wowed us with his resilience and tenacity, and finally charmed his way into the hearts, and home, of Richard & Tania!
Our thanks to Richard & Tania for making Jet their forever furkid!

Another Local Mixed Breed goes home!
QUEENIE, to be re-named as COCOA, meets her forever companions from the Ward family!
Local Mixed Breeds are gaining ground as pet dogs of choice, as they tend to exhibit 'hybrid vigour' (by virtue of being a "Mixed Breed") and thus tend to be more resistant and hardier dogs! They are also generally very faithful and devoted companions. Prospective dog adopters are strongly encouraged to give our local mixed breeds a chance. For a real testament of how sweet ...

Animal Groups Upset Over HDB Notice Suggesting Owners "Debark" Their Dogs 28th Aug 2014, by SPCA Singapore
We thank our facebook followers and commenters for alerting us to an HDB notice offering the "debarking... through surgery" of dogs, as well as using "training collars to control" dogs.
We have written in to the press, advocating strongly against the aforementioned "measures". We urge all to always turn to humane, effective approaches in resolving existing communal issues. The dogs' welfare and wellbeing ought NOT to be compromised. We would like to affirm the staunch commitment of many to upho...

Our rescue officers rushed to the scene near the AYE bus stop (opposite the Cycle & Carriage), and spotted the distressed kittens huddled together in a drain coursing through th...

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT: SPCA's Matriarch, worth IDA-lising!
IDA, easily one of our most senior dogs, has been with us since March 2008! She’s indeed come a long way since her humble beginnings as a neglected and abandoned puppy. Tan/White-coloured cross-breed Ida is currently 9 years wise.
What makes Ida extra appealing is her exceptionally personable, sweet and unassuming character. Blessed with also one of the friendliest, most approachable faces, she enjoys being with people and would make a...
