“I just saved this calf,” said Elma Ščetić, one of our rescuers based in Bosnia. “She’s only 45 days old. I was visiting relatives, at that moment that neighbors sold their calves to the butcher. There were three calves. They were all so beautiful, I only saw theirs carcasses through the window because the butcher had immediately slaughtered these poor creatures on the road itself and put their bodies in some boxes to drive them to the butcher’s shop. The fourth calf was the smallest and the youngest and still alive so I ran outside to stop him. I am very shaken. She is safe here now and in a separate area away from the other cows while we make sure she is healthy.
