We love happy updates, and today’s is very special. We’d like to show the power of your donations in helping young wild animals in the Amazon rainforest. Last spring, you helped fund the completion of a nursery at the Amazon Shelter in Peru. It’s a wildlife rehabilitation center that plays a critical role in saving the lives of animals that most of us may not ever encounter.
“Since we built our onsite nursery last year we have had a huge influx of baby animals, mostly primates,” said shelter representative Kim Cruz. “Many animals are orphaned from the hunting and illegal pet trade and it is our job to rescue them and rehabilitate them so they can one day live wild again in the jungle. Each baby needs to be fed 6 times a day as well as vitamin supplements, electrolytes, and other medicines to help their rehabilitation process. Their milk is a $500 cost alone a month! We wrote to Nestle company to see if they would be able to donate cans of milk. “
“Yesterday we received a baby Capybara!” Kim continued. “He was orphaned and found by a local farmer. He’s still very young and needs to be bottle fed, but with love and dedication he’ll reach maturity and can return to the wild. Did you know that capybaras are the largest rodents in the world? They can grow up to four feet long and weigh over 100 pounds!”
