The 10th eBorneo Knowledge Fair organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak was held earlier today in Miri, Sarawak. The event saw one of our community engagement officers, Nadya Cindy Nibi, sharing about the importance of inclusive conservation.
WWF-Malaysia practices inclusive conservation through partnerships with local communities to conserve and protect the surrounding natural resources. The aim is to empower the communities to become stewards of the environment and co-manage the natural resources sustainably. One of our long-standing collaborations has been with the community-based platform, The Alliance of the Indigenous Peoples of the Highlands in the Heart of Borneo (FORMADAT), who seeks to conserve their culture and the natural areas of their ancestral lands in the Highlands of Sarawak.
One representative from our community partners, Kading Sultan, also took centre stage to share the journey of growing chemical-free Adan rice in the Baβ Kelalan highlands, Sarawak. For many years, rice farmers in Baβ Kelalan struggled to control pests and increase their yields using conventional means. In 2017, WWF-Malaysia brought in an expert in chemical-free farming technique from SRI Lovely Farm, Kedah, Captain (Rtd) Zakaria Kamantasha, to Baβ Kelalan. The technique imparted is known as System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Since then, farmers are seeing better yields and at the same time conserving the surrounding rivers and forests.
A big shout-out to these dedicated community platforms and rice farmers for their unwavering commitment in conserving our forests and rivers
