WHY DO MONITOR LIZARDS INSPIRE FEAR, BUT NOT OTTERS?
Sankar Ananthanarayanan, Co-founder and President of Herpetological Society of Singapore received feedback after his awareness talk, to include ‘content warning’ as not everyone is prepared to see visuals of snakes and lizards. Read the commentary below, as Sankar explores that suggestion and shares on the strong fear amongst many Singaporeans, towards reptiles in general, even though reptiles and amphibians are not a rare sight on our island. This is in contrast with animals that are furry and cuddly, despite the two categories of animals both being native wildlife deserving of our respect and protection.

Pythons and monitor lizards have provoked strong reactions from the people who encountered them in Singapore. This fear stems from our isolation from them, says Herpetological Society of Singapore’s Sankar Ananthanarayanan.
