EFFECTIVE? AFTER OVER A DECADE OF CULLING, WITH INCREASING COMPLAINTS? THINK AGAIN! PIGEON POISONING IN THE NEWS
ACRES will continue to share the cases of pigeons and other protected species of birds who have been affected by this indiscriminate, ineffective and inhumane method of bird population control using Alpha Chloralose. While ACRES is glad that there are other effective measures put in place – such as tray return policy, exclusion netting and spikes to address food and nesting site availability, and education by town councils to their residents – we need understanding also from residents that it takes effort and time (=years) to show effective results on their population. In the meantime, if culling alone continues, it only will make the situation worse.
Mounting complaints have forced many town councils to continue poisoning as a desperate measure, which has been scientifically proven to make the situation worse. Dedicated resources needs to be committed to addressing the root cause of the issue – whether it is bird proofing the aircon compressor outside your window, intensive educational campaigns or designing eateries with bird proofing in place.
ACRES will also continue to engage town councils, for a dialogue to engage bird feeders and coffee shops to conduct site visits in order to propose site-specific recommendations.
ACRES will also continue to reach out to the authorities, on the lack of specific requirements on how the trapped birds are treated/handled [disposed] or lack of reporting requirements on the number of birds trapped.
