The Asian Giant Softshell Turtle Pelochelys Cantor..

The Asian Giant Softshell Turtle (Pelochelys cantorii), also called as Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle, in honour of Danish zoologist Theodore Edward Cantor.

It is a large turtle—growing almost as long as the Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle (1.2 m) but not as heavy. It has a smooth, olive-brown leathery carapace. Take a closer look at the picture, and you will see why it is also known as the frog-faced turtle!

This elusive creature is rarely seen because they spend most of its life underwater, buried under the sand in the riverbed, with only their eyes and mouth visible. Why do they hide like this? Because they are ambush predators, with the ability to snatch and swallow unsuspecting prey rapidly.

Now, if you recall, we have presented you four species of softshell turtles, i.e. the Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle, Southeast Asian Softshell Turtle, Malayan Softshell Turtle and the Asian Giant Softshell Turtle.

Up next, the three species of terrestrial tortoises native to Malaysia. Stay tuned!
