Today, we have a special freshwater #turtle named for its unique flat-top shell.

The Malayan Flat-shelled Turtle (Notochelys platynota) is not easily confused with other turtles, despite the fact that they don’t have any fancy colour or pattern. Special-looking guy, right?

It is one of a few turtle species in the world to have more than five vertebral scutes, typically having six or seven. The vertebral scutes are the central row of shell plates running along the center of the back.

It lives in shallow streams in freshwater swamps. It is not easy to spot because of the dark chestnut brown colour and its shy nature, but hatchlings are bright green, making them very vulnerable to predators.

This species can be found in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.
