We Encountered A Group Of Giggling Children While ..

We encountered a group of giggling children while going on a brisk walk, they were surrounding this turtle.

.

One was screaming “Mama adik jumpa Penyu!” to her mother.

While another said “Kakak selamatkan dia dari tepi jalan.”.

.

Here’s a brief introduction to this unique freshwater turtle. 🐢

.

This is an Asian Box Turtle and it is one of the most common species of freshwater turtles in Malaysia. They live in lakes, ponds and paddy fields.

.

Box turtles is the only turtle species with a hinged-plastron. They basically have a “door-like” plastron (bottom shell) that enables them to fully closed their shell. Just like a box! 📦 Pretty cool right?

.

What should or shouldn’t you do when encountering any freshwater turtle? You should NOT BRING THEM HOME.

.

The thought of “saving turtles” by taking them to your home is actually removing them away from theirs 😞

.

Turtles naturally roam in search of food, mate or nesting area. Most of the time, they cross roads. If you happen to encounter a turtle in attempt to cross roads, here’s how you can help (make sure it’s safe for you to do so first!).

1. Gently hold the sides of the shell and pick up the turtle.

2. Help move the turtle to the direction it’s heading towards. If not they’ll make another attempt to cross 😱

3. Sanitise your hands!

.

Help spread the awareness to your family and friends. Just in case you’re lucky enough to encounter one then, you’d already know what to do! 💕
