How many turtles are endangered?

Nearly all species of sea turtle are now classified as endangered, with six of the seven existing species are classified as threatened or endangered.

More than half of the world’s turtle and tortoise species are now threatened with extinction, according to a study published by a group of 51 global turtle and tortoise experts (read paper here: https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(20)30636-9).

Loss of habitat is the biggest threat to turtles and tortoises globally. Other threats include the pet trade, overconsumption for food and medicine, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.

Turtle Conservation Society

The Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia was established in October 2011.
