BUKIT PANJANG MONKEY ON #InternationalMacaqueWeek
Just in April 2021, Our #Wildlifemanagement team handled over 100 cases involving macaque sightings all over our “city in nature”.
Since 20th April, several sightings of a monkey at Bukit Panjang, near the Senja-Cashew Community Centre, Pang Sua Pond, Jelapang Road, and Teck Whye Lane were observed. We have communicated on the below with the Senja-Cashew CC and Holland-Bukit Timah and requested for infographics to be placed in public areas.
It is not uncommon to see transient long-tailed macaques, our native wild animals, moving through residential and industrial areas, as they leave their troop to join another troop or form another troop when they reach maturity. Fragmented natural habitats are increasing the frequency of wild animals being spotted in our urban areas.
Residents and park users are advised to follow proper wildlife etiquette such as;
- Maintaining a safe distance
- Not feeding wild animals
- Not displaying any food or plastic bags openly
- Ensuring that food waste is disposed properly (bins that are closed and not accessible)
- Not leaving belongings unattended
Consistency in following the above is key to ensuring public safety and encouraging the movement of transient macaques out of the area.
Let’s do our part to coexist with our native wild animals. If you need advice or have suggestions, please write to wildlifemanagement@acres.org.sg
