Many of you know that our charity is now feeding 1,110 rescued dogs in Serbia each month. It’s like climbing a mountain every month – some days it feels like the air is too thin. But we keep going because they count on us, and Sergei, a magnificent 8-year-old Russian Terrier, tells a story with an ending they all wish to have….

Found lying on the street in severe Serbian winter some two years ago, Sergei could not get up and was frozen. Sadly, this is not the first time we have encountered a dog or cat frozen to the ground. He had an owner, but that person did not want him back. So Sergei ended up in Sasha Pesic’s refuge, a wonderful free-running sanctuary in Serbia where we sponsor more than 600 dogs.

Because of his size, Sergei was a natural leader.

“Smaller dogs came to find safety in his calm presence,” our teammates at Dog Happiness Belgium explained. “He did not like turmoil and only had to bark once to call the others to order. His calm and natural energy is amazing to see. The smaller dogs licked his coat when it was wet after rain. So special to see this cooperation among them.”

“Though this type of dogs feels at best in a home of their own, having a family to love. So when the workers left the shelter in the evenings, Sergei would hurt himself trying to follow them each time. It was devastating.”

But we found a solution when a Swedish organization visited the shelter and fell in love with Sergei and agreed to take him back to Sweden to join a forever family. For the first time, Sergei is really treasured. He belongs. He is loved. He is said to be, “the most perfect dog we ever met.”

Though Sergei stood out for his grand size and sensitivity, the truth is that all 1,100 dogs are counting on us for food, for protection-from-cruelty, for shelter, for veterinary care – and WE HOPE- to find them good homes. We struggle to feed so many dogs. If anyone would like to help, we have several ways to do so,
