Would you like to join Harmony Fund in helping the dogs of the nightmarish Backa Palanka pound in Serbia?
“We have formed a group and have been able to get rescuers to get out about 80 dogs so far,” project leader Candy Magowan said.”We asked if we could take over the pound, but we were refused. The pound was closed by the veterinary group in Serbia for infractions, but is expected to reopen on Monday.”
While ultimately we hope to get a permanent closure of this facility, raising funds for a legal campaign will take time. In the meanwhile, some improvements are underway.
“We have raised money to get the trough feeders to keep the food off the ground, bought food and pallets for the dogs to keep off the concrete and have had straw donated,” said Candy who is organizing a local spay/neuter event as well. “But it is still are horrible place. The staff are cruel and the dogs are terrified.”
“They don’t allow rescuers to pick up the dogs themselves and they handle the poor things like bags of trash.” rescuer Miska Oksanen explained.
Miska and her teammate Henna Nuutinen have taken custody of several of the dogs and Harmony Fund has donated to help with the cost of veterinary care for the significant health issues the dogs are wrestling with.
There is hope here. We do believe we can turn this around for the dogs as soon as we have the financial resources to properly pursue legal actions to close them down. For now, focus is on healing the survivors.
Thank you everyone who is willing to step forward and help us as we fight cruelty here and provide care for thousands of other dogs like this one.
