Giant Trap To Control Javan Myna Population Triale..

HAS CULLING MYNAHS BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN TO WORK EFFECTIVELY?

That’s the question we would like to ask the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) on this pilot project.

1. Culling of crows for over a decade and not specifically addressing human feeding of birds and food waste management has led to increase in other scavengers/opportunistic feeders’ populations (rodents, pigeons and mynahs) in estates.

2. Rodents attract pythons, resulting in more work for organisations like us, town councils and complaints.

3. Well trimmed grass on roadsides/fields and the HDB sheltered walkways with gaps in roofs have also encouraged more feeding grounds and nesting grounds for mynahs (and pigeons) increasing their population. Research has proven that these factors have increased nesting site availability in Singapore.

4. ACRES would like to stress that If nesting/roosting site availability alone is addressed but food sources are not addressed, considering how adaptable this species is, they will adapt to other nesting site options. If individuals are culled (or removed), it is not only inhumane, but also creates a void which can be taken over by other individuals/species because the food availability and nesting site availability remains.

5. Without addressing indiscriminate feeding and food waste management, culling will never address the issue, but end up with more funds expended in managing “nuisance” complaints and culling animals.

6. It is not just the government’s role to keep the estates clean, residents must end feeding birds. This asks for total feeding ban of wild birds and adequate enforcement measures in place.

HOW CAN YOU HELP

1. Write to the AVA urging to end culling and consider humane holistic measures of controlling bird population, considering science and compassion.

2. If you know of residents/see people feeding, ask them to stop feeding birds.

3. When you eat in semi/outdoor eateries, clear your plates /leftovers before leaving.
