In 2017, Antonia Kertesz accepted an offer from her Romanian municipality. In exchange for a property equipped with dog kennels and dog housing, she would act as a regional pound. However, the local mayor now refuses to pay for kibble for the dogs and he is essentially creating the perfect storm for mass starvation. With 148 dogs, nearly 2.5 tons of kibble are needed every month. A small group in Belgium and some local people donate when they can, but that has not been enough. The dogs have been rationed for over a month, not eating every day, and getting so thin.

“They need your help. Please, winter is coming,” Antonia pleaded.

As soon as we learned of this crisis last week, we immediately jumped into action. We helped with food for the dogs and we are talking with Antonia about ways to organize food on a regular basis and to perhaps negotiate aid from the city so that this never happens again.

“Because of you, yesterday I bought the food for the dogs in the shelter,” Antonia said after her first good nights’ sleep in a while. “I’ve also bought a bunch of canned food and kibble for cats. I bought 2 beds for paralyzed puppies and litter for the cats. Thank you very much for the huge help given to the dogs and cats in my shelter.”

And now, a group called Animal Web Action has run a social media campaign to bring in a large amount of food. The animals have enough kibble to get through January and this gives us a bit of time to prepare before the next time the food runs out.

GETTING READY FOR WINTER:

Today we’re doing all we can to provide straw bedding, plywood, plastic sheeting, heaters, firewood and food to animal rescue centers trying to get ready for winter. The cold has already arrived.
