MEET OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE: ORIENTAL DWARF KINGFISHER

The Oriental dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca) also known as the black-backed kingfisher or three-toed kingfisher is one of the smallest kingfisher species, measuring between 11-14 cm, and weighing 14-21.5 grams. Adults are brightly coloured with yellow underparts and lores (the area between the eye and beak). They are beautiful birds with many colours like blue, lilac, white, yellow and orange. There are no obvious differences between males and females while juveniles are duller.

They have been recorded to feed on fishes and crustaceans, insects, frogs, and lizards. They would kill larger prey before consuming it. They do that by holding their prey by their break and repeatedly hitting it against tree brushes, forest floor and stones. In Singapore, the Oriental dwarf kingfisher can be found in our nature parks and reserves.

These birds are well liked among wildlife photographers and park goers. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you to be animal conscious and safe. Use your cameras zoom function instead of approaching the bird. Turn your flash off. Please remember that patience and appreciating them from a distance can also give you a good photo of these birds.

Often these birds could be mistaken for a baby kingfisher because of their small size. They also may fly onto reflective surfaces and end up stranded in built environment.
