CHICKENS HAVE DOUBLED IN SIZE OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS TO CATER TO HUMAN NEEDS
With the purpose of satisfying market demands and increased profit, chickens raised for meat have been selectively bred over the years to accelerate their growth and increase their weight. Today, chickens weigh up to three kilograms – almost double the size of a chicken from 60 years ago. And their breasts are 80 percent larger. A chicken reaches the desired slaughter weight in only six weeks, whereas in the 1950s it would normally take them six months to fully mature.
The industry has commodified the chicken and maximised its flesh, creating a species of bird that has severe health problems and very poor genetic disposition. These chickens can barely stand or move, and undoubtedly suffer. As a result of the fast growth, the organs and skeleton of the chicken are not developed enough for the chicken to survive for more than a few months.
The best way to help chickens is by reducing your consumption of chicken meat. Opt for delicious, healthy, plant-based alternatives instead. Its an easy switch to make!
Weve gone to incredible lengths to meet consumer demand for chicken so far as to double the size of broiler chickens!
