HONEY WEARS AN IRON HANDLE IN HER MOUTH

Today we’re assisting in a rescue that may surprise you. With an iron handle protruding from her mouth, this dog named Honey had been seen for quite some time in one Sarajevo neighborhood. She clearly escaped from her abusers, but no one could get near her. Honey is frightened of people, and it wasn’t until rescuer Sejla Ledena Kraljica used a sedative that Honey could be safely captured and taken to the vet. And what came next was a shock.

You see, Doctors Mirela Stojanovic and Dejan Stojanovic of Veterinarska Ambulanta have seen this kind of iron handle in the mouthes of other dogs.

“They said they have had experience with similar cases,” said Sejla who was translating for us. “Often this is done to the dogs who are preparing for fights, in order to strengthen the jaw. Honey lived with the iron in her mouth for about a month, and she has deformity of the teeth and lower jaw.. it will be OK but we will need to wait for a couple of months of recovery. The iron circle was seated in her teeth and carved in the lower part of the jaw. Now she can not close her jaw completely.”

It is difficult for Honey to eat, and she must chew slowly.

Funds are needed to pay for Honey’s ongoing veterinary care and her boarding until she has been fully rehabilitated and can be adopted. She is one of many, many, many dogs we are keeping alive & well in Sarajevo this month. If anyone can help, please – we’d be so grateful for donations to help us meet these costs.
