Soi Dog Foundation is now conducting the second phase of its PUP (Preventing Unwanted Puppies) programme. This is a 3 year mobile sterilisation program with the goal of sterilising more than 80% of Phuket’s dogs by mid-2015.

The second phase of the programme consists of visiting every area of Phuket a second time to spay and neuter dogs not sterilised during the first phase.

The number of dogs sterilised each day in the second phase is typically lower than in the first phase. In May 2014, 1,676 animals were prevented from producing homeless and unwanted puppies and kittens – Soi Dog’s best month on record for sterilisations.

In addition, during the month of May, Soi Dog conducted a number of other sterilisation programmes in other areas of Thailand.

A sterilisation programme was run for the dogs at Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary in northern Thailand, in collaboration with the staff of the sanctuary and Worldwide Veterinary Services. Soi Dog supplied the medication and a veterinarian. A total of 142 dogs were sterilised.

Soi Dog also sponsored a two day sterilisation campaign at the end of May in Surat Thani, another province of southern Thailand, in addition to a second sterilisation programme in Nakhon Sawan province in northern Thailand. Again, in both cases, medication was paid for by Soi Dog and a veterinarian supplied.

Sugar cane is grown in the Nakhon Sawan area and when fields are burnt, many mothers and new born puppies were accidently burnt alive, which caused great distress to the farmers.

Catching dogs in this open rural environment was difficult and local residents provided valuable assistance. Over 300 dogs have now been sterilised, to prevent this tragedy continuing. Many thanks go to NetAP Switzerland for their support in holding these clinics.

Finally, during the month of May, Soi Dog worked with Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development to spay and neuter 90 animals from Bangkok’s Suan Kaew temple.

Soi Dog firmly believes that the only effective and human method of reducing the number of unwanted animals is to spay and neuter dogs and cats and prevent more animals from being born into a life of misery, where they will go on to be abandoned, abused, or die of poisoning, drowning, starvation, injury or disease.

It has been scientifically proven that spaying and neutering 75% to 80% of a species population will see a reduction in numbers.

Sterilising animals is expensive and we are limited by the revenue we generate. Vets and dog catchers have to be paid, and drugs and other surgical supplies purchased. Overheads like fuel and trucks also have to be paid for.

Please help us continue this valuable programme by donating towards it today. You can do so by clicking the photo below.

Thank you.
