“I was crossing a bridge into Montreal from the neighoring city of Laval, when I saw a small black ball of fur cowering by the curb about halfway across the bridge. It wasnt moving, but some kind of alarm switch went off in me, and I just had to check because I had a hunch this animal was alive.
When I got to land I found a parking spot and immediately rushed back onto the bridge, on foot this time, and made my way back. I finally got back to about where I thought I had seen the animal, but it was tricky because the railing kept me from seeing what was on the other side. So I leaned over and there it was, a cat. It was indeed alive and scared as hell.
Somehow that animal had made its way this far onto the bridge, Im guessing at a time when there was much less traffic and was caught by surprise by the morning commute. Cars were driving by at crazy speeds, and the poor thing was frozen by fear, incapable of simply crossing over the railing and onto the narrow pedestrian walkway.
I had to act quick, but I also had to be gentle, for scaring the cat even more could send it running straight into the path of an oncoming car. Traffic was steady so I got down on my knees right next to the cat and reached out to him through the railing.
I dont know if somehow the cat realized I was trying to help, but I manage to grab him. He was too big for me to reel him in one-handed though, and I didnt want to risk losing my grip, so I completely laid down on the side so I could use both my hands and I grabbed the cat and pulled him through the bars and onto the walkway. I got back up, but still had the problem of holding a panicked cat right in between a lane of speeding cars on one side, and a hundred feet drop into the water on the other. So I stuffed the cat into my jacket and held on to him as tight as I could, and started making my way back towards the land.
When I got there, far enough from the bridge, I got him out of my jacket and put him down on a small patch of grass. He immediately took off towards the closest houses. I have no idea if any of them was his home, I can only hope so, but all that mattered was that he was safe now.”
